A mediator at a leading Suffolk law firm has welcomed the government’s review into the benefits of mediation.

Victoria Mayhew, a solicitor and accredited mediator at Prettys in Ipswich, made the comments after the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) called for views ahead of a potential expansion of mediation.

The responses could shape future reforms to civil, family and administrative justice and help establish the best ways to settle disputes away from the courts.

The MoJ has also extended its mediation voucher scheme, which Prettys take part in, where separated parents can apply for a £500 voucher towards the cost of resolving child related disputes.

Victoria said: “Mediation ensures every party’s voice is heard and adds a layer of flexibility not available in the courtroom.

“It does not attempt to repair a relationship, but instead provides the best possible outcome for both sides while ensuring lines of communication remain open.

“Each case is different, with mediation tailored to the needs of the clients.

“Making mediation an even more accessible option for everyone can only be a good thing.”

Among the most common reasons for mediation at Prettys is for parents going through divorce.

Avoiding the courtroom not only avoids high legal costs and trauma for parents, but also helps avoid the delays to the court system exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Victoria, who has worked as a mediator for almost 10 years, added the process can make separation easier on children.

She said: “By keeping those lines of communication open and ensuring tension is kept at a low, we help families transition to life post-separation.

“Doing so could help parents go to momentous occasions together, such as their child’s first sports game, or even their university graduation.

“The important thing to think about is how your child may look back on the process in the future – and knowing you have made the right choice for them.”

The government has recently announced it is investing an extra £800,000 in the mediation voucher scheme on top of the £1million investment at its launch in March.
